The Long Island (NY) Chapter provides a STEM rich interactive experience for high school girls involved in the first NSBE Jr. chapter on Long Island. The students engage in coding and gain exposure to robotics. In addition to hands on STEM experiences, the students are mentored by members of the Long Island Links, participate in running a NSBE, Jr. chapter, learn life skills, and obtain college preparation seminars.
The Arts facet partners with several school districts across Long Island to challenge students to develop a passion for the arts. Students are nurtured to hone their writing skills, perform creative dance, and express themselves through poster art. The programs instill confidence, maturity and encourage self-expression and creativity. All participants receive certificates and top performing students receive awards at a formal reception.
The Long Island (NY) Chapter works with our local community to address the needs to families and children. A number of our initiatives include our partnership with Bethany House where we support women and children experiencing homeslessness, through transition to stability. The chapter also has an Adopt -A-Family program where we provide holiday gifts of toys and clothing to families. In addition, the chapter supports Dress for Success by providing programming and business apparel to women who are transitioning back into the workforce.
The International Trends and Services facet provides services and delivers transformational programs from a global perspective. The chapter collaborates with multiple Long Island school districts to educate high school students on the arms of the United Nations through the LIFE Program. Students gain an appreciation for the role that the United Nations provides in encouraging world peace and addressing environmental issues across the globe. The culminating activity is a Links sponsored trip to the United Nations where students dine in the Delegate’s Dining Room. In addition, our chapter sponsors initiatives in Haiti, Jamaica and Africa where we support women, schools and educational efforts.
Heart health is at the forefront of this facet’s work. Annual health fairs, presentations by medical professionals, Zumba activities, nutrition education, and demonstrations of healthy meal preparation involve families in our greater service area. Partnerships with local school districts facilitate the chapter’s ability to advocate for the prevention of childhood obesity, as well as to promote the health benefits of physical activity. The facet supports the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk through a committed effort to fundraising. The chapter has participated in walks in Nassau and Suffolk County.
The facet partners with Colgate’s Bright Smile Bright Futures Program to foster oral health through education and screenings. This collaboration educates children and families about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through good nutrition, exercise, and a sound oral hygiene regimen.
